First Sunday after Christmas, Dec. 31, 2023
In the beginning was the Word. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. And the Word became flesh and lived among us.
This is the beginning of the story of the followers of Christ. The incarnation of God on Earth. The true Light which came into the world. This is the beginning of the story of us, the Church. This is the beginning of the story of St. Paul San Pablo Episcopal Church. And this is the beginning of the story that brought me here to be in ministry with you all for a time. We are part of a story that literally will continue forever. This True Light has come into the world to enlighten everyone. And we, gathered here in Christ’s church, carry that Light within us for everyone.
You are a supportive and loving community here at St Paul San Pablo. You come here to worship God and give thanks. Your thanks is genuine, your gratitude is sincere. You also care for one another, you carry each other’s burdens. The church is not a place to come and pretend you or your life is perfect. The church is more like a hospital, tending to the wounds of the heart and soul and finding healing in the love of God found in each other. When times are dark or the world seems so dark you wonder if there is any hope, remember that a very little light dispels the dark in a big room. Your light will shine, even if you think it is feeble. Everyone can see your little light in the darkness.
The Word that became flesh still lives among us. That word was spoken at the beginning of time and the sound waves it generated still pulse throughout the universe. God is at work in you, at work here in San Pablo. Believe it despite what the circumstances of the world may lead you to believe. Mary believed it. She believed what she had been told despite having to give birth in someone else’s barn away from her own home and family. She believed it when she and Joseph had to take their young baby and flee as refugees into Egypt because they feared for their lives. Fortunately, there was no wall to prevent them from entering, but I’m sure they faced many of the same hardships that asylum seekers and refugees have faced trying to find a safe place for their children today. From a very early age, Jesus understood the hardships that God’s beloved have had to endure.
For centuries Christians continue to carry the Light that came into the world, to listen to the Word that reverberates in our souls since the dawn of time, the Word that became a human being and walked among us, uniting us forever in the hope and truth that stills stands in the face of evil. Our part of this story of the incarnation of God is to believe in this hope that we have been called to carry for the world, to be the light bearers in a dark time for our neighbors who need to see the path before them. Sometimes we are the light, sometimes others hold the light for us.
As my Chapter of this story at St Paul’s San Pablo draws to a close, it is important that we understand it to not be an ending of a story, but a continuation. God’s church, the gathering of God’s people, is universal and eternal. While I set off to lead a church in Austin, we are still in ministry together because we are bound to each other through Christ. We still have the same mission that Christ’s mother had, being bearers of Christ’s light in the world. It is a mission you all had before I came, a mission we pursued together while I was here, and a mission that will continue on. It was no accident that we spent this time together, it has eternal consequences. We who are gathered here in the name of Christ continue the work together, regardless of where we are. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us and the Word is still alive and still dwells with us! We are bound eternally together as Christ’s own forever.
Our particular Chapter together has been a great blessing to me and to my family. Your warm welcome and support was an exceptional gift and I thank you for your hospitality, respect, and love. In this brief time together we have shared joys and sorrows, celebrations and mourning. In love and commitment, we honor God and go out into the world to love and serve. I was made a priest here in this sacred space with you. You helped make that day one of the most important days of my life. This time will never be forgotten. Thank you for letting me learn and grow with you. Thank you, Father Ed, for being a friend and supporter in ministry.You love and care for your people here with such genuine compassion. I am grateful for every adventure we had here.
I have wonderful memories of our shared life together: baked goods, laughter, prayer, tears, serving at Crossroads, and dealing with the hard questions of life. [Plus, you have helped me learn to speak Spanish better!] You truly have helped me become a better priest. I am grateful for each one of you and will continue to pray for you. Let us continue to carry the Light of Christ for our communities and the world, knowing we are bound together in our calling to follow Christ. Thank you St Paul, San Pablo. I truly do love you all.

En el principio era el Verbo. La luz verdadera, que ilumina a todos, venía al mundo. Y el Verbo se hizo carne y vivió entre nosotros.
Éste es el comienzo de la historia de los seguidores de Cristo. La encarnación de Dios en la Tierra. La verdadera Luz que vino al mundo. Éste es el comienzo de la historia de nosotros, la Iglesia. Éste es el comienzo de la historia de la Iglesia Episcopal de San Pablo. Y éste es el comienzo de la historia que me trajo aquí para estar en el ministerio con todos ustedes durante un tiempo. Formamos parte de una historia que, literalmente, continuará para siempre. Esta Luz Verdadera ha venido al mundo para iluminar a todos. Y nosotros, reunidos aquí en la Iglesia de Cristo, llevamos esa Luz en nuestro interior para todos.
Aquí, en San Pablo San Pablo, son una comunidad solidaria y afectuosa. Vienen aquí a adorar a Dios y a dar gracias. Su agradecimiento es genuino, su gratitud es sincera. También se cuidan unos a otros, cargan los agobios de los demás. La iglesia no es un lugar para venir y pretender que tú o tu vida son perfectos. La iglesia es más como un hospital, que atiende las heridas del corazón y del alma y encuentra la curación en el amor de Dios que se encuentra en los demás. Cuando los tiempos sean oscuros o el mundo parezca tan oscuro que te preguntes si hay esperanza, recuerda que una lucecita disipa la oscuridad en una gran habitación. Tu luz brillará, aunque crean que es débil. Todos pueden ver su pequeña luz en la oscuridad.
El Verbo que se hizo carne sigue viviendo entre nosotros. Esa palabra fue pronunciada al principio de los tiempos y las ondas sonoras que generó aún laten por todo el universo. Dios actúa en ustedes, actúa aquí en San Pablo. Créanlo a pesar de lo que las circunstancias del mundo puedan hacerles creer. María lo creyó. Creyó lo que le habían dicho a pesar de tener que dar a luz en el establo de otra persona, lejos de su propia casa y de su familia. Lo creyó cuando ella y José tuvieron que coger a su bebé y huir como refugiados a Egipto porque temían por sus vidas. Afortunadamente, no había ningún muro que les impidiera entrar, pero estoy segura de que se enfrentaron a muchas de las mismas dificultades a las que se enfrentan hoy los que buscan asilo y los refugiados que intentan encontrar un lugar seguro para sus hijos. Desde muy temprana edad, Jesús comprendió las penurias que han tenido que soportar los amados de Dios.
Durante siglos, los cristianos seguimos llevando la Luz que vino al mundo, escuchando la Palabra que reverbera en nuestras almas desde el alba de los tiempos, la Palabra que se hizo ser humano y caminó entre nosotros, uniéndonos para siempre en la esperanza y la verdad que sigue en pie frente al mal. Nuestra parte en esta historia de la encarnación de Dios consiste en creer en esta esperanza que hemos sido llamados a llevar por el mundo, a ser los portadores de luz en una época oscura para nuestros prójimos que necesitan ver el camino que tienen ante sí. A veces nosotros somos la luz, a veces otros sostienen la luz por nosotros.
A medida que mi Capítulo de esta historia en San Pablo llega a su fin, es importante que entendamos que no es el final de una historia, sino su continuación. La Iglesia de Dios, la reunión del pueblo de Dios, es universal y eterna. Aunque estoy por partir para dirigir una iglesia en Austin, seguimos juntos en el ministerio porque estamos unidos unos a otros por Cristo. Seguimos teniendo la misma misión que tenía la madre de Cristo, ser portadores de la luz de Cristo en el mundo. Es una misión que todos tenían antes de que yo llegara, una misión que perseguimos juntos mientras estuve aquí, y una misión que continuará. No fue casualidad que pasáramos juntos este tiempo, tiene consecuencias eternas. Los que estamos aquí reunidos en nombre de Cristo continuamos juntos la obra, independientemente de dónde nos encontremos. El Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros, ¡y el Verbo sigue vivo y sigue habitando con nosotros! Estamos unidos eternamente como hijos de Cristo para siempre.
Nuestro Capítulo particular juntos ha sido una gran bendición para mí y para mi familia. Su cálida acogida y su apoyo han sido un regalo excepcional y les agradezco su hospitalidad, respeto y amor. En este breve tiempo juntos hemos compartido alegrías y penas, celebraciones y lutos. En el amor y el compromiso, honramos a Dios y salimos al mundo para amar y servir. Me hicieron sacerdote aquí, en este espacio sagrado, con ustedes. Ayudaron a hacer de ese día uno de los más importantes de mi vida. Nunca olvidaré este momento. Gracias por dejarme aprender y crecer con ustedes. Gracias, Padre Ed, por ser un amigo y un apoyo en el ministerio. Amas y cuidas de tu gente aquí con una compasión tan genuina. Estoy agradecida por cada aventura que tuvimos aquí.
Tengo recuerdos maravillosos de nuestra vida compartida juntos: pan dulce, risas, oraciones, lágrimas, servir en Crossroads y hacer frente a las preguntas difíciles de la vida. [¡Además, me han ayudado a aprender a hablar mejor español!] Realmente me han ayudado a convertirme en mejor sacerdote. Estoy agradecida por cada uno de ustedes y seguiré rezando por ustedes. Sigamos llevando la Luz de Cristo a nuestras comunidades y al mundo, sabiendo que estamos unidos en nuestra vocación de seguir a Cristo. Gracias San Pablo. Les quiero a todos de verdad.
